Is it too late to book a lawn renovation this season?
Short answer: probably not. Here's what renovating in late spring, summer and early autumn looks like, and where the real cut-off sits.

Every year there's a moment in spring when people look at the lawn, realise it's still thin and patchy after winter, and think they've missed the boat. The best lawns on the street booked their renovation back in July. Surely it's too late now?
Usually, it isn't. Perth's lawn renovation season runs from September through to March. Spring is the ideal time, but it's the start of the window, not all of it.
Here's what renovating at each point in the season looks like, and where the real cut-off sits.
Why the season is so long in Perth
Couch, buffalo and kikuyu are warm season grasses. They do their growing and repairing when the soil is warm, and Perth soil stays warm for a long time. From September, when growth picks up, through to March, a renovated lawn has the conditions it needs to recover.
What matters isn't the date on the calendar. It's whether the lawn has enough warm growing weeks left after the work to knit back together before things cool down.
October and November: still prime time
If you're booking now, you're still in the sweet spot. Soil is warm, growth is strong and the harshest heat hasn't arrived. A lawn renovated in October or November typically recovers quickly and goes into summer thick and level.
The only catch is that everyone else has the same idea. Spring is the busiest time of year for renovation work, so the sooner you're on the calendar, the more say you have in the timing.
December and January: it works, with more care
Renovating in early summer is absolutely doable. The lawn grows fast in the heat, so recovery can be quick.
The difference is watering. A lawn that's just been dethatched, cored and top dressed is more exposed than usual, and a run of hot days puts it under pressure. Deep watering on your rostered days, a wetting agent if the sand is repelling water, and keeping an eye out for stress all matter more at this time of year. Our Perth watering days guide covers how to make the roster work.
It's also worth avoiding the middle of a heatwave. If a string of 40 degree days is forecast, it makes sense to shift the work a week either way.
February and March: the late window
Late summer and early autumn still work well. The soil is warm, the peak heat is usually easing, and the lawn has time to recover before the cooler weather arrives.
The later you go, the less growing time is left afterwards. A renovation in early March has less runway than one in early February, so recovery can take a little longer, and heavy work is best done earlier in this window rather than right at the end of it.
When it really is too late
From April, Perth soil starts cooling and warm season grasses slow down. A lawn renovated then may not fully recover before winter, and it can sit thin and open for months, which gives weeds every chance to move in.
Renovating in winter is the one thing to avoid. The lawn won't recover until spring, and you've swapped a tired lawn for a bare one. If you've missed the window, the best move is to book early for next spring. Our post on when to book a lawn renovation explains why winter is the planning season.
If you can't get a full renovation, start somewhere
Not every lawn needs the full works, and not every problem has to wait for a renovation slot.
- Compacted, hard ground where water runs off? Core aeration on its own opens up the soil and works any time through the growing season.
- Spongy thatch and scalping? Verti-mowing clears it out. Our verti-mowing guide covers the signs and timing.
- Bumpy surface and hungry sand? Top dressing levels it and builds the soil.

The short version
Perth's renovation season runs September to March. October and November are still prime time. December and January work with extra attention to watering. February and March are the late window. From April, it's time to plan for next spring instead.
